I went back to the doctor today for a follow-up to the lab work. It went well. I'm doing okay emotionally today. Better than I was doing last night, actually.
I found out that my bad cholesterol levels were extremely hight, at 241. My glucose level wasn't great, either, at 141. Holy cow! I've NEVER had my glucose levels over 96! That shocked the heck out of me. My eyes just bugged out, and I nearly fell off the chair.
After hearing those levels from the doctor herself, I'm more than ready to get things started on my end. I can't live with myself with such high numbers.
Dr. P. had to walk out to get some info for me, but she sent her nurse in to see me. Guess what? I GOT A FREE GLUCOMETER!!!!! Yay! If you've never had diabetes or don't know anyone who has it, then you probably won't understand my elation about this nifty freebie. So, I was given a glucometer and supplies for a few days. I got Rx's for the test strips, the lancets, and Metformin.
Per Dr. P.'s orders, I have to test my Fasting Blood Sugar levels once a day, every day. I have to get my glucose levels down to below 120. I also have to exercise at least 4 times a week, 30 mins. each time. I have to call a certain hospital for information about their diabetes class - as in I *HAVE* to take the class, since they're faxing the form and everything to the hospital.
I pretty much know how to use a glucometer, but each one is different. I hope I acquainted myself well enough with the darn thing. I was distracted and fighting sleep. (Lost that fight eventually, by the way...) I start monitoring my glucose levels tomorrow morning. I just hope I do it right. I think I will, though.
I took my first Metformin pill after dinner. Dr. P. kept going back and forth on how many I should take everyday. She finally settled on 2 pills a day, but still thinks it may be too much. But she wants me to start out with the 2, and if my levels drop too much to cut back to 1 pill a day and to give her a call about it.
I go back in 2 weeks for another follow-up, to see how the medicine is working. She said I can go back to see her, or go back to see my PA since he knows my history more than anyone else. I'm not sure. They're both great. Hopefully I'll have lost at least 5 lbs. by then, and gotten my glucose levels under control. We're not going to worry about my cholesterol levels yet. We're going to see what diet, exercise, and glucose monitoring do for that first.
I've got a massive headache right now, and have had it for a couple of hrs. at least. And I think the Metformin is getting to me, 'cause I've got nausea like you wouldn't believe. But I've got one more thing to write about before I get of my computer for the night.
J and I have been trying to lose weight together for a weeks now. (Ha! Other than my dance class, I've only exercised once.) Well, after I told her that I'm diabetic last night, we talked about losing weight and my new diet. (Hmm...It just hit me that I have to combine a gall bladder diet with a diabetic diet...) We've decided to give our joint effort a twist. We're each putting in a $10 gift card to anywhere - not necessarily food - at the beginning of the month. Whoever loses the most weight wins their own gift card AND the other one. So it's a better incentive to lose weight, because $$$ just doesn't cut it for me. I'm glad I came up with the gift card idea. So it all begins AGAIN May 1. We continue with the "plan" we're on now until then. On May 1, we weigh in and the competition begins.
Oh, and my diabetic husband? I somehow managed to talk him into joining us. So it's now a $30 pot of various gift cards.
